J. Lean (a.k.a. D.J. Lean) was a British businessman working for the Asiatic Petroleum Co. He was an assistant to P.H. Since many foreign governments and companies urged their nationals to leave the city upon deterioration of the situation, Lean left Nanjing in early December 1937.
